New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo discussed his trademark backflip with coach John Harbaugh after an awkward landing at Fanatics Fest.
New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh and general manager Joe Schoen held private discussions with running back Cam Skattebo after the second-year player performed an awkward backflip at Fanatics Fest in July 2026. Skattebo, a former fourth-round selection out of Arizona State, is returning from an open ankle fracture suffered during a Week 8 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles in 2025. Despite the injury, the running back produced 410 rushing yards on 101 carries and five touchdowns across eight games during his rookie campaign. He added two receiving scores to his season total, reaching the end zone in each of his final three appearances before his season ended prematurely.
The recent backflip at Fanatics Fest followed a similar display in late May, when Skattebo celebrated a home run at the Brian Burns Celebrity Softball Game. While the player insisted he was unhurt and would remain healthy for the season opener, the Giants organization expressed a preference that he avoid such risks during the lead-up to training camp. Harbaugh noted that he has had five or six conversations with the running back since his return, emphasizing the principle of taking care of one's health for the benefit of the team.
Training Camp Status and Depth Chart
Skattebo has emerged as the clear-cut first-team running back during the initial two practices of summer training camp in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. He currently leads the depth chart ahead of Tyrone Tracy Jr. and has been a full participant in all sessions. This follows his return to the field during mandatory minicamp in the spring. Schoen credited the team's medical and training staff for their work in rehabilitating the running back's fractured ankle in time for the start of the 2026 preseason program.
During spring practices, Harbaugh previously joked with Skattebo about a mutual agreement to refrain from flips on the field. However, the repeat occurrence at the public Fanatics event two weeks ago prompted the front office to revisit the topic. Schoen highlighted that as a young player in the New York spotlight, Skattebo must remain conscious of how his actions are perceived, particularly regarding injury risk while rehabbing a significant bone fracture.
Statistical Impact and 2026 Outlook
Skattebo was hitting his stride prior to the Week 8 injury, and the Giants expect his role to expand significantly in his second professional season. The coaching staff does not intend to prohibit the trademark backflip if Skattebo scores a touchdown during the regular season, a celebration the player has already voiced his intent to perform. The organization’s primary concern centered on the risk taken during the offseason while the athlete was still in the recovery process.
Harbaugh described the communication as part of an ongoing process to keep the roster on the same page. He characterized Skattebo as a listener who is open about his thoughts and dedicated to being great at his position. The big-picture message delivered by the Giants brass focused on the responsibility of players to maintain their health and be available for the team. The running back's five rushing touchdowns and 4.05 yards per carry average from his limited rookie season remain the foundation for his projected growth as the primary back in the Giants' offensive scheme.
