The New York Giants released veteran running back Najee Harris on Tuesday, two days after he recorded just two yards on four carries in a 34-27 home loss to the New Orleans Saints. Harris started Sunday's contest but finished with the fewest rushing yards among the six Giants players credited with a carry. The defeat dropped the team's record to 3-2-1 for the season.
Despite dressing four running backs—Harris, Cam Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy Jr., and Devin Singletary—the Giants managed only 34 total rushing yards as a team. Backup quarterback J.J. McCarthy led the roster with 26 rushing yards after replacing Jameis Winston. Skattebo, who leads the team with 99 rushing yards this year, did not record a carry on Sunday following a stretch of four fumbles earlier in the season.
Harris, 28, expressed frustration following the game regarding a committee approach that he claimed prevented him from establishing a rhythm. A source told ESPN's Jordan Raanan that these comments were not the reason for the release. Coach John Harbaugh noted Sunday that the team was providing equal repetitions to backfield players in an attempt to find a productive starter, stating that no one had yet seized the primary role.
A former 2021 first-round pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers, Harris joined the Giants this offseason. He previously spent four years in Pittsburgh and had a stint with the Los Angeles Chargers that was interrupted by a torn Achilles.
