EAGAN, Minn. -- Safety Harrison Smith has agreed to a one-year contract worth $12.25 million to return to the Minnesota Vikings for his 15th NFL season. The deal, announced Saturday, carries a maximum value of $16.25 million according to reporting from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo. Smith, 37, remains one of only six defensive backs in league history to achieve at least 35 interceptions and 20 sacks, joining Hall of Fame members Charles Woodson, Larry Wilson, Ronde Barber, LeRoy Butler, and Brian Dawkins. His career totals currently stand at 39 interceptions and 21.5 sacks, a combination surpassed only by Barber’s 47 interceptions and 28 sacks.

The veteran defender finished the 2025 campaign with a dominant performance in a 23-10 victory against the Detroit Lions on Christmas Day. In that contest, Smith recorded one sack, one interception, two tackles for loss, and three pass defenses. This late-season surge followed a year where he missed the first two games and the majority of training camp due to a personal health issue. Despite those early absences, he has maintained remarkable durability, appearing in 183 out of 197 possible games since returning from a left foot injury that cost him half of his second professional season.

Roster Depth and Training Camp Injuries

Minnesota’s decision to finalize the Harrison Smith Vikings return follows a series of significant injuries across the defensive secondary and linebacker corps. Veteran Jamal Adams, signed just before training camp, was lost for the season after suffering a torn right quadriceps. Additionally, third-round draft pick Jakobe Thomas from Miami missed a large portion of the summer with a back injury, while Theo Jackson has been sidelined by a leg ailment. These personnel losses left the team thin at safety, despite having returning players Josh Metellus and Jay Ward on the roster.

Smith is the second veteran defender to join the team this week, following the signing of linebacker Kyle Van Noy. The Vikings previously terminated Smith’s contract in March for salary cap procedural purposes, though he never formally announced a retirement. The organization had prepared for his departure at the end of last season, even inviting his wife and children to sound the ceremonial Gjallarhorn at U.S. Bank Stadium during a Week 11 pregame ceremony.

Career Milestones and Notre Dame Roots

Originally a first-round selection out of Notre Dame in 2012, Smith established himself immediately as a starter. During his rookie campaign, he recorded three interceptions—returning two for touchdowns—alongside one sack and eight pass breakups. Coach Kevin O’Connell had previously attempted to honor Smith’s career during a 16-3 win over the Green Bay Packers by putting him in for a final kneel-down play, but the Vikings offense never regained possession to execute the tribute.

During the final game of the previous season, O'Connell coordinated with referee John Hussey to arrange a fourth-quarter timeout specifically to recognize Smith. While many within the organization expected the safety to retire following those tributes, he instead opted for this new one-year agreement. His return provides stability to a defensive unit that saw its depth chart challenged throughout the 2026 preseason schedule.
