This statistical model, developed by ESPN analytics writer Seth Walder, places Hutchinson ahead of Green Bay’s Micah Parsons (11.1) and Houston’s Will Anderson Jr. (10.5). Despite Myles Garrett setting a single-season record with 23 sacks last year, the Los Angeles Rams edge rusher is projected for 10.1 sacks this season, ranking fifth overall. Hutchinson’s top billing follows a 2025 campaign where he recorded 14.5 sacks in 17 games while playing 91% of defensive snaps.

The 2026 forecast represents the sixth year of this veteran pass-rusher analysis. The model utilizes inputs including sack totals from the previous two seasons, projected snaps via Mike Clay, and pass rush win rates from NFL Next Gen Stats. It also incorporates betting market team win totals, player age, and the historical sack rates of opposing quarterbacks. The Detroit Lions enter the season with the second-easiest schedule according to FPI and rank eighth in the Football Power Index, providing Hutchinson with frequent leads and passing situations.

Top Five Pass Rush Forecasts

Micah Parsons ranks second with an 11.1 projected sack total despite an anticipated knee injury return in Week 6. Parsons, who recorded 12.5 sacks in 14 games last year, is projected for 619 snaps this season. Will Anderson Jr. follows in third at 10.5 sacks after finishing second in Defensive Player of the Year voting with 12 sacks in 2025. The Houston Texans face a schedule featuring Lamar Jackson (9.8% sack rate) and Justin Herbert (8.8%).

Nik Bonitto of the Denver Broncos holds the fourth spot with a 10.3 projection. Bonitto secured 14 sacks last season but played only 62% of defensive snaps. Myles Garrett rounds out the top five with a 10.1 mean projection. Factors limiting Garrett include his age of 30 and a Rams defensive scheme that blitzed at a 19% rate last season, the second-lowest in the league. The model also notes the Rams face a quarterback slate that takes sacks less frequently than the NFL average.

Defensive Leaders Six Through Ten

Brian Burns of the New York Giants is projected for 9.7 sacks following a 16.5-sack season. His forecast is tempered by an 8.5-sack performance in 2024. San Francisco’s Nick Bosa ranks seventh with a 9.4 projection, though he is currently managing tendinitis and soreness following a September ACL tear. Baltimore’s Trey Hendrickson follows at 9.2 sacks; he led the league with 17.5 sacks in 2024 but was limited to four sacks in seven games last year due to injuries. Alex Highsmith of the Pittsburgh Steelers completes the top 10 with an 8.9 projection. Jeffery Simmons of the Tennessee Titans is the highest-ranked defensive tackle at 26th with a 6.9 sack projection. Simmons was a first-team All-Pro last season with 11 sacks. Odafe Oweh, now with the Washington Commanders, is projected for 7.0 sacks at 20th overall. Oweh recorded 7.5 sacks in 12 games for the Chargers last year after a mid-season trade from Baltimore.

Abdul Carter, the third overall pick in 2025 for the New York Giants, is projected for 7.0 sacks despite only recording four last season. Cincinnati’s Dexter Lawrence II ranks 51st with a 5.6 projection. Lawrence was acquired from the Giants for the 10th overall pick following a season with 0.5 sacks. The Bengals currently hold the easiest overall schedule in the NFL and the easiest schedule of quarterbacks based on past sack rates.
