Gianni Infantino intends to stand for a fourth term as FIFA president in March, citing full endorsements from the Asian Football Confederation and African nations.
Gianni Infantino intends to stand for a fourth term as FIFA president at the next election scheduled for March. The Swiss official told BBC Sport he maintains the support of a "vast, vast majority" of the 211 member associations that originally elected him, despite facing calls to resign following plans to sell a stake in the World Cup earlier this year.
Support for the incumbent includes a full endorsement from the Asian Football Confederation, confirmed during a recent visit to Tokyo. Infantino also reported that all Confederation of African Football countries pledged their backing during his time in Cape Verde. These endorsements come as he resists pressure from UEFA and CONCACAF, the governing bodies for Europe and North and Central America and the Caribbean, which have been at the forefront of demands for his resignation.
Infantino emphasized the importance of the democratic process within the organization, stating that the views of the majority must be respected. While UEFA has raised questions regarding FIFA's recent proposals, the governing body stated it intends to provide answers without breaching confidentiality.
