Inter Miami CF defeated New York City FC 2-0 at Nu Stadium on Wednesday night to officially clinch a spot in the 2026 MLS playoffs. Germán Berterame opened the scoring by tapping in an assist from Luis Suárez, marking his first goal since May 24. Rodrigo De Paul extended the lead in the first half, striking a shot into the upper left corner following a pass from Lionel Messi just outside the box.
Goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair preserved the clean sheet by saving a late penalty kick from NYCFC. The victory moves Miami into second place in the Eastern Conference with 52 points through 29 matches, trailing league leaders Nashville SC. This win marks the second league victory for coach Cristian 'Kily' González since he assumed the role on September 16.
Lionel Messi currently leads Major League Soccer with 23 goals and 14 assists during the regular season. The Herons are the defending champions, having won the 2025 MLS Cup with a 3-1 result against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Following this result, NYCFC remains just outside the playoff positions. Inter Miami will next face Atlanta United away on Saturday, while NYCFC is scheduled to host LAFC.
