This vital win in Path A sets up a final showdown against Bosnia and Herzegovina, who progressed after a 1-1 draw with Wales ended in a 4-2 penalty shootout triumph. In the Asian confederation, Iraq kept their tournament hopes alive during Round 5 of World Cup qualifying by defeating the United Arab Emirates. Following a 1-1 draw in the opening leg, Iraq converted a decisive penalty 17 minutes into second-half stoppage time to secure their progression to the interconfederation playoffs.

The global race for the 48-team field began on October 12, 2023, when Myanmar’s Lwin Moe Aung recorded the first goal of the cycle during a 5-1 win against Macau. Japan became the first nation to officially qualify through the AFC in March 2025, eventually joined by Iran, Jordan, South Korea, Uzbekistan, Australia, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. These eight nations represent the full automatic allotment for Asia. Qatar and Saudi Arabia earned their spots by winning their respective groups in Round 4, while the UAE and Iraq were forced into the fifth-round playoff.

UEFA Playoff Paths and Results

European qualification features 16 teams competing for the final four spots across four distinct pathways. In Path B, Sweden defeated Ukraine 3-1 to advance to a final against Poland, who eliminated Albania with a 2-1 scoreline. Path C saw Türkiye secure a narrow 1-0 win over Romania, while Kosovo outlasted Slovakia in a seven-goal thriller that ended 4-3. Türkiye and Kosovo will now meet on March 31 to determine who earns a World Cup berth. Path D was dominated by Denmark, who cruised to a 4-0 victory over North Macedonia. They will face Czechia in the final after the Czechs drew 2-2 with the Republic of Ireland and subsequently won 4-3 on penalties.

The 12 automatic qualifiers from Europe are already confirmed: England, France, Croatia, Norway, Portugal, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Scotland, Spain, Austria, and Belgium. These teams won their groups during a qualifying process that concluded in November. The remaining playoff contenders consist of 12 group runners-up and the four highest-ranked UEFA Nations League group winners who failed to finish in the top two of their qualifying groups. Russia remains suspended from all competition due to the invasion of Ukraine, leaving 54 active nations in the hunt.

Interconfederation Playoff Structure

Six countries will compete in Guadalajara and Monterrey, Mexico, for the final two spots in the tournament. Jamaica advanced to the final of this bracket by defeating New Caledonia 1-0 in the semifinals. They are scheduled to face DR Congo on March 31. DR Congo reached this stage by winning the CAF playoffs, which included a 1-0 semifinal win over Cameroon and a 4-3 penalty shootout victory against Nigeria following a 1-1 draw. Nigeria had previously beaten Gabon 4-1 in their semifinal match.

Bolivia also secured a spot in the interconfederation finals by defeating Suriname 2-1. They will face Iraq on March 31 for a direct ticket to the World Cup. Iraq and DR Congo entered the playoff system as the two highest-seeded teams based on FIFA World Rankings, allowing them to bypass the semifinal round. The participating teams represent five confederations: DR Congo (Africa), Iraq (Asia), Jamaica and Suriname (Concacaf), New Caledonia (Oceania), and Bolivia (South America).

Regional Qualification Standings

In North America, Panama, Curaçao, and Haiti have secured the three automatic qualifying spots available to Concacaf nations not hosting the event. Jamaica and Suriname finished as the two best runners-up in Round 3 to move into the intercontinental playoffs. The qualifying process involved 32 nations, including early-round penalty wins for Anguilla and the British Virgin Islands over the Turks and Caicos Islands and U.S. Virgin Islands.

South America has finalized its six automatic participants: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Bolivia finished seventh in the 10-team CONMEBOL league phase, which ran from September 2023 to September 2025, earning them their current playoff position. In Oceania, New Zealand claimed the lone automatic spot for the OFC by defeating New Caledonia 3-0 in the final on March 24.
