Jackson Suber carded a 5-under 65 at Royal Birkdale to take a one-shot lead following the opening round of the British Open. The 26-year-old American, an Ole Miss alumnus playing in just his third career major, secured his position at the top of the leaderboard during a 15-hour day of play in Southport, England. Suber’s round was highlighted by a 6-foot eagle on the 17th hole, which he set up by hitting a choked-up 4-iron from 233 yards to within six feet. This performance marked his seventh total round in a major championship and his debut on a links course.

Suber leads by a single stroke over Sungjae Im and England’s Daniel Brown, who both finished at 4-under par. The leaderboard features a dense group of nine players at 67, including Open debutants Alex Smalley, Ryan Gerard, M.J. Daffue, and Pierceson Coody. Other notable players at 3-under par include 2018 champion Francesco Molinari, Robert MacIntyre, Thomas Detry, and Cameron Young. Bryson DeChambeau also posted a 67, leaving him two shots off the pace after a round where he hit only four fairways but reached the green or its vicinity on several long drives.

DeChambeau and Smalley Navigate Royal Birkdale

Bryson DeChambeau utilized a high-risk strategy, frequently using his driver to clear fearsome bunkers. He recorded birdies on the par-4 second and the par-4 10th after hitting tee shots over hazards and close to the putting surfaces. Despite missing three greens, DeChambeau remained in contention until late errors on the back nine. He dropped shots due to putting on the par-5 14th and a missed 8-foot par putt following a chip on the 18th. He also failed to convert three birdie opportunities from inside 10 feet, including one on the redesigned 321-yard fifth hole.

Alex Smalley held a share of the lead until the final hole of his round. His tee shot on the 18th struck a spectator fence and bounced 15 yards out of bounds, resulting in a double bogey. Smalley noted that all three players in his group hit toward that area, but his ball suffered an unlucky break. Despite the closing 6, he remains among the group at 67. This performance follows his recent experience taking a two-shot lead into the final round of the PGA Championship.

Statistical Struggles for McIlroy and Scheffler

Rory McIlroy finished his opening round with a 1-over 72, struggling significantly on the greens. McIlroy missed three separate 4-foot putts during a four-hole stretch and recorded six bogeys throughout the day. In contrast, world number one Scottie Scheffler began his round with four birdies in the first six holes. However, Scheffler failed to record another birdie for the remainder of the day, finishing with a 2-under 68.

Jackson Suber’s ascent to the top of the leaderboard was bolstered by a critical par save on the new par-3 15th, a hole characterized by severe slopes on both sides of the green. He followed that save with a 6-foot birdie on the 16th before his eagle on the 17th. Suber attributed his success to keeping the ball in good spots and avoiding unnecessary pressure. Five of the top 12 players on the leaderboard are making their Open Championship debuts this week, navigating a course that began the tournament with warm and breezy conditions.
