James Harden Signs $97M Extension to Lead Cleveland Cavaliers Through 20th Season

James Harden agreed to a three-year, $97 million contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers, a deal that includes a 2028-29 player option.

James Harden has agreed to a new three-year, $97 million contract to remain with the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to agents Mike Silverman, Troy Payne, and Brandon Grier of Equity Sports. The agreement, which includes a player option for the 2028-29 season and a trade kicker, ensures the 11-time NBA All-Star will enter his 20th professional season. Harden, who turns 37 on Aug. 26, becomes only the second player in league history to sign for over $90 million in guaranteed salary at age 37 or older, joining LeBron James. This financial commitment will eventually push Harden's career earnings past the $500 million mark, a milestone currently held only by James and Kevin Durant.

The Cavaliers secured this deal after Harden declined a $42.3 million player option in June. By opting for a three-year structure over a more expensive two-year deal, Harden allowed Cleveland to navigate under the first and second luxury tax aprons. This financial flexibility enabled President Koby Altman to execute a five-team trade on Wednesday to acquire 23-year-old Peyton Watson. In that transaction, the Cavs sent Max Strus to the Clippers, while delivering a 2031 first-round pick and a 2032 second-round pick to the Denver Nuggets. Harden played a primary role in recruiting Watson during the player's restricted free agency.

Roster Overhaul and Statistical Impact

Cleveland’s revamped starting lineup now features Harden alongside Donovan Mitchell, Watson, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen. Mitchell recently committed to his own maximum contract extension through the 2030-31 season. To further bolster the bench and manage the salary cap, the Cavaliers signed EuroLeague standout Mario Hezonja. These moves followed a series of trades, including the departure of guard Dennis Schroder to Charlotte for Tre Mann, who was subsequently moved to Washington as part of the five-team Watson deal.

Since arriving from the LA Clippers in early February in exchange for Darius Garland, Harden has transformed the Cavaliers' efficiency. The team posted a 21-9 record following his debut, which stood as the fifth-best mark in the NBA after Feb. 7. Following the All-Star break, Harden averaged 20.5 points, 7.7 assists, and 4.8 rebounds per game. His presence helped Cleveland reach its first Eastern Conference finals since 2018. During the 18-game postseason run, he maintained averages of 19.2 points, 5.5 assists, and 5.1 rebounds.

Historic Shooting and Career Milestones

Statistically, Harden remains one of the most dangerous offensive threats in the league. According to GeniusIQ, he led the NBA in isolations ran last season and ranked second in made step-back 3-pointers. He currently sits at No. 2 on the all-time list for career 3-point field goals made, trailing only Stephen Curry. The former 2018 league MVP enters the upcoming season at No. 9 on the NBA’s career scoring list.

Harden's career accolades include three scoring titles and two assist championships. His new contract places him in an exclusive financial tier; while he currently sits at $414 million in career earnings, the completion of this $97 million deal will see him join the $500 million club. Other active players approaching this mark include Curry, who will surpass it this season with a $62.5 million salary, Paul George in 2027-28, and Joel Embiid in 2028-29. By remaining in Cleveland, Harden continues a partnership that saw the team thrive late in the previous season, providing a secondary playmaker to complement Mitchell in the backcourt.
