The Jared Jones streak began on July 2 in Philadelphia; after surrendering an RBI double to Bryce Harper in the third inning, Jones retired the final four Phillies he faced. He followed that performance by retiring all 18 batters across six perfect innings against Atlanta on July 8.

During Saturday's contest, Jones sat down the first eight Cleveland hitters in order to reach the 30-batter milestone. The sequence ended when Steven Kwan recorded a base hit to left field. Immediately following that single, Guardians rookie All-Star second baseman Travis Bazzana hit an RBI triple into the right-field corner, cutting the Pittsburgh lead to 2-1. Despite the break in the streak, Jones earned the win as the Pirates improved to 51-47, moving within one game of St. Louis and Miami for an NL Wild Card spot heading into the nightcap.

The franchise record remains held by Harvey Haddix, who retired 38 straight in 1959. Haddix retired the last two St. Louis Cardinals in one game before retiring 36 Milwaukee Braves on May 26, 1959. That perfect effort ended in the 13th inning due to a throwing error by third baseman Don Hoak on a ball hit by Felix Mantilla, leading to a 1-0 loss.

Manager Don Kelly noted that Jones displayed excellent command and flow during his last two starts. Jones himself acknowledged the achievement, stating that hearing the numbers and realizing what he accomplished over three games was "pretty cool." The right-hander admitted to using "choice words" for himself after surrendering the run to Cleveland but noted he is finding his groove more easily now.

Jones missed the entire 2023 season after undergoing internal brace surgery in May, a procedure that reinforces the existing ligament rather than replacing it with a graft. Upon returning to the big leagues this year, Jones struggled through his first six outings, posting a 1-1 record with a 5.76 ERA and allowing five home runs in 25 innings. Opponents batted .270 against him during that initial six-game stretch.

In his most recent three appearances, Jones has limited opposing hitters to a .100 average (5-for-50). He has surrendered only two runs across his last 15 innings of work, totaling 23 strikeouts and three walks in that timeframe. During his 2024 rookie campaign, Jones went 6-8 with a 4.14 ERA and ranked sixth among major league rookies with 132 strikeouts. He attributed his early-season struggles this year to nerves and the 12-month layoff from competitive game action.
