Javier Aguirre Appointed Valencia Manager on Deal Through End of Season

Javier Aguirre has taken over at Valencia after the club lost five of its first seven matches, leaving them second-to-last in the Spanish league.

Javier Aguirre was officially presented as the new manager of Valencia CF on Monday, signing a contract that runs until the end of the current season with a club option for a one-year extension. The 67-year-old replaces Carlos Corberán at a club that has lost five of its first seven matches and currently sits second-to-last in the Spanish league. Aguirre arrives following his third stint as Mexico's national team coach, which concluded with a round-of-16 defeat against England at the World Cup in Mexico City.

The veteran manager revealed he rejected four other job offers before accepting the position at the Mestalla. His appointment follows a restructuring of Valencia's soccer operations that included the removal of chief executive Ron Gourlay and the naming of Braulio Vázquez as sporting director. According to Vázquez, Aguirre did not discuss financial terms before agreeing to join the struggling side.

Aguirre's debut on the sidelines is scheduled for October 11 away at promoted Racing Santander. This role marks his seventh head coaching position in Spain, having previously managed Osasuna, Atletico Madrid, Real Zaragoza, Espanyol, Leganes, and Mallorca. He takes over a team that finished ninth last season and has not placed higher than ninth in LaLiga since the 2018-19 campaign.
