Supporters' group Spirit of Shankly has requested a meeting with Liverpool officials regarding a potential 30% stake sale to a consortium featuring Jeff Bezos.
A consortium led by Amit Bhatia is closing in on a deal to acquire a 30% minority stake in Liverpool FC. The investment group includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who possesses an estimated personal wealth of £210 billion ($283bn), and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. This potential transaction follows a significant rise in the club's valuation under Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which purchased the side for £300 million in 2010 and now sees it valued at approximately £4.5 billion.
Spirit of Shankly (SoS), the club’s primary supporters' group, has formally written to Liverpool seeking clarity on the proposed ownership structure. The group emphasizes that the control of the club is fundamental to the fanbase, citing past events that led to FSG’s initial takeover. The fans are requesting a meeting to discuss how much influence the new investors will have regarding seats on the board and involvement in football operations both on and off the pitch.
Consortium Leadership and Experience
Amit Bhatia, the son-in-law of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, is the designated head of the bidding group. Bhatia brings 18 years of sports business experience to the table, having served as a director and co-owner of Queens Park Rangers until his departure last month. In contrast, Jeff Bezos has no prior history of investing in professional sports teams, despite previous links to potential takeovers of the NFL’s Washington Commanders and the Seattle Seahawks.
Bezos currently maintains a diverse portfolio that includes ownership of The Washington Post and the space exploration firm Blue Origin. While his personal net worth is sufficient to purchase the Premier League club outright, the current proposal focuses on a significant minority position rather than a full change in custodianship.
FSG Investment History and Strategy
Liverpool chief executive Billy Hogan recently confirmed to The Athletic that FSG principal owner John Henry remains open to strategic investment opportunities. This stance was evidenced in 2023 when Dynasty Equity acquired a 3% share in the club for roughly £120 million. FSG issued a statement last month confirming that the Bhatia-led consortium had expressed interest in a strategic minority investment, though they have offered no further public comment since that time.
SoS expressed concerns regarding the impact of similar sales at other clubs, noting that changes in ownership can lead to shifts in behavior and decision-making that supporters may find undesirable. The group’s statement reiterated that the interests of LFC and its fans must remain the priority during these negotiations.
Current Club Operations and Transfers
Amid these ownership discussions, Liverpool continues its summer activities, including the pursuit of Bradley Barcola, who was named in the PSG Super Cup squad despite ongoing transfer talks. The 2026 summer transfer window remains active for all Premier League clubs as they finalize their rosters for the upcoming 2026-27 season.
A spokesman for the consortium led by Bhatia declined to comment on the specifics of the bid or the timeline for completion. The supporters' group continues to wait for a formal response regarding the level of control these new investors will exert over the club's future direction.
