Fenway Sports Group has sold a 30% minority stake in Liverpool FC to 1892 Holdings, a consortium involving Jeff Bezos and Amit Bhatia.
Fenway Sports Group (FSG) has finalized the sale of a minority stake in Liverpool FC, valued at approximately 30%, to a consortium including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. This transaction establishes an overall valuation for the Premier League club at £5.5 billion ($7.45B). The purchasing group, titled 1892 Holdings to commemorate the year of the club's inception, is spearheaded by Amit Bhatia. Bhatia, a British-Indian businessman and former co-owner of Queens Park Rangers, will assume the role of vice-chairman at Anfield.
Financial Structure and Board Appointments
The investment group comprises the Bezos-led K5 Sports fund and EE Capital, which serves as the family office for Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. While Bezos currently ranks as the world's third-richest individual with a Forbes-reported net worth of $271.4 billion (£200.3B), he is not slated to occupy a seat on the Liverpool board. Instead, Bryan Baum, the managing partner of K5 Global, will provide representation for his interests. Elaine Saverin is also scheduled to join the club's board of directors as part of the agreement.
This deal represents the first time Jeff Bezos has invested in professional sports, following previous links to various NFL franchises. It also marks the first external minority investment into the Merseyside club since September 2023, when Dynasty Equity acquired a 3% share for roughly $200 million ($271M). FSG originally purchased Liverpool in 2010 for a fee of £300 million, meaning the new valuation represents an eighteen-fold increase over the initial purchase price.
Leadership and Operational Stability
Despite the significant influx of capital, FSG will maintain majority ownership and full operational control of the club. Day-to-day management at Anfield is expected to remain unchanged under the existing leadership structure. FSG president Mike Gordon noted that the decision-making process was guided by the club's long-term interests and a philosophy that extends beyond a single season. Gordon stated that Bhatia and his partners demonstrated an appreciation for the specific foundation already established at the club.
Amit Bhatia expressed that 1892 Holdings is making the investment based on a deep belief in the current leadership and a desire to support continued success. He cited a high level of respect for FSG’s achievements as owners during their tenure. The consortium's involvement is intended to complement the existing business framework rather than overhaul the sporting or administrative departments.
Strategic Growth and Investor Profiles
The entry of 1892 Holdings brings together high-profile figures from the technology and finance sectors. The inclusion of Eduardo Saverin’s family office via EE Capital adds further Silicon Valley ties to the club's ownership group. These new partners join a structure where FSG continues to prioritize fiscal stability and long-term growth.
Liverpool fans had previously sought clarity regarding reports of a Bezos-linked bid before the official confirmation on August 14, 2026. The completion of this 30% sale ensures that the club remains one of the most valuable sporting properties globally, trailing only a select few franchises in total valuation. The move solidifies the club's financial positioning as they look toward future seasons under the continued stewardship of Fenway Sports Group.
