Joey Porter Jr. Noncommittal on Playing Week 1 Without Contract Extension

Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. practiced Tuesday for the first time since Sunday's roster cutdown but remains uncertain about his Week 1 status.

PITTSBURGH -- Entering the final year of his rookie deal, Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. stated "I don't know" when asked Tuesday if he would take the field without a signed contract extension. The second-year defender initially gave an affirmative "Yeah, for sure" regarding his availability if healthy, before immediately walking the statement back with a "maybe." These comments followed his first practice session since being activated off the physically unable to perform (PUP) list during Sunday’s roster cutdown deadline.

Porter missed the entirety of training camp and the preseason due to a back injury. The cornerback confirmed the ailment was aggravated during mobility workouts on the first day of camp, citing it as the "whole reason" for his extended absence. While Coach Mike McCarthy noted before Tuesday's session that the cornerback would "ramp up" his participation levels, Porter declined to speculate on his readiness for the Week 1 season opener against the Atlanta Falcons. He described his current status as a "day by day" recovery process while attempting to return to full strength alongside his teammates.

Negotiations and Draft Class Extensions

The standoff comes as the Steelers front office successfully finalized extensions for three other members of Porter’s draft class. Outside linebacker Nick Herbig, tight end Darnell Washington, and defensive lineman Keeanu Benton have all signed new deals. Porter described himself as "ecstatic" for his teammates, noting that the group entered the league together. He characterized their new contracts as well-earned and well-deserved, though he admitted his own negotiation process has been "tough" and represents his first experience with the business side of the NFL.

Despite the lack of a deal, Porter reported to work on Tuesday, stating his current focus is to show up every day and remain prepared. He remains neutral on the likelihood of a resolution, placing the decision-making responsibility on the "guys upstairs" and their vision for the team's roster. The cornerback noted he does not know specifically what is currently holding up the negotiation process.

Support from Veterans and Family

During this period of uncertainty, Porter has sought counsel from his father, former Steelers player and coach Joey Porter Sr. While the younger Porter declined to share specific details of their conversations, he credited his father for providing great advice and acting as a consistent supporter. The cornerback emphasized that his father has been in his corner his entire life and would not steer him in the wrong direction during these contentious negotiations.

Veteran defensive leader Cameron Heyward also offered public support for the cornerback on Tuesday. Drawing from his own experience with a difficult negotiation during last year's training camp, Heyward advised Porter not to take the business personally, though he acknowledged that players inevitably do. Heyward stated that the locker room remains unanimous in wanting Porter on the field and expressed a desire for all players to be acknowledged financially for their work to maximize their earnings during a short professional career.

Week 1 Outlook Against Atlanta

As the September 1 deadline passes, Porter’s status for the matchup against the Falcons remains unresolved from both a physical and contractual standpoint. He noted that he and Coach McCarthy are on the same page regarding his gradual return to play. Porter refrained from speaking about the future, focusing instead on the fact that he was back running with the team during Tuesday's drills. He continues to consult with his agents and team management regarding his participation floor without a long-term extension in place.
