New co-owners Jose E. Feliciano and Kwanza Jones took control of the San Diego Padres following a record $3.9 billion valuation and a unanimous vote by MLB owners.
Co-owners Jose E. Feliciano and Kwanza Jones finalized the San Diego Padres purchase at a record $3.9 billion valuation, receiving unanimous approval from Major League Baseball’s 29 other owners last Monday. The new ownership group, which holds a stake exceeding 40%, includes Clearlake Capital co-founder Behdad Eghbali, Los Angeles Lakers heirs Joey and Jesse Buss, minority owner Alfredo Harp Helu, and Padres CEO Erik Greupner. The franchise currently maintains a $220 million payroll, ranking ninth in the majors, as the team enters the final stretch of August with a 15-6 record for the month.
During an hour-long media session at Petco Park on Monday, August 24, 2026, Feliciano was introduced as the designated control person. The event commenced with an original song recorded by Jones and concluded with the couple donning customized jerseys. This transition follows the tenure of the late Peter Seidler, who purchased the team 14 years ago at an $800 million valuation alongside Ron Fowler. While recent leadership under John Seidler and Eric Kutsenda scaled back spending, the new owners vowed to spend ambitiously yet judiciously to pursue the first championship in the franchise's history, which dates back to 1969.
Financial Strategy and Ownership Structure
Feliciano, a Puerto Rican investor and managing partner of Clearlake Capital Group, brings experience from his co-ownership of the Chelsea football club in the English Premier League. Despite his ties to private equity, he clarified that Clearlake Capital will not be involved in the San Diego Padres purchase or operations. The investment is structured as a family endeavor alongside Jones, a former Division I track athlete and Princeton University alumna who founded her own media and personal development firm. The couple also manages the Kwanza Jones & Jose E. Feliciano Initiative, a philanthropic organization.
General manager A.J. Preller currently oversees a roster featuring stars Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr., Jackson Merrill, and Mason Miller. This group has driven the team toward a pace for a third consecutive postseason appearance, despite the absence of a local-media contract and the burden of existing long-term player agreements. The current ownership group also retains members of the Seidler family, maintaining a link to the previous leadership era that saw record attendance figures and the departures of high-profile players like Juan Soto and Blake Snell.
World Series Objectives and Community Legacy
Feliciano stated during the formal introduction that the organization's primary goal is to win the World Series, noting the team has not reached the Fall Classic since 1998. He emphasized that being aggressive in the market will be balanced against the long-term health of the club. Jones described the acquisition as a family-first investment, distinguishing it from typical private equity acquisitions by focusing on outcomes beyond financial gain.
Erik Greupner, who has served the organization since 2010, remains as CEO and part of the investment group. The new leadership aims to build upon the foundation left by Peter Seidler, who held control from November 2020 until his death in November 2023. The $3.9 billion valuation represents a nearly five-fold increase in franchise value over the last 14 years, reflecting the team's growth despite recent frugal offseasons. The owners intend to utilize the support of the city to reinvest in the stadium and the roster while operating within their means.
