Karius Denies Kane as Schalke Hold Bayern Munich to 0-0 Draw

Bayern Munich failed to score for the first time in the Bundesliga for over 18 months during a goalless stalemate against newly-promoted Schalke.

Bayern Munich’s perfect start to the new season ended on Saturday as they were held to a 0-0 draw by newly-promoted Schalke. The result marks the first time the Bavarian side has failed to find the net in a competitive fixture since a 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the July 2025 Club World Cup. Additionally, the stalemate concludes a reign at the top of the Bundesliga table that lasted nearly two years. The deadlock follows a high-scoring league opener last Friday in which Vincent Kompany’s squad scored five goals against Stuttgart.

Loris Karius proved instrumental in the Schalke goal, securing the clean sheet with a series of vital interventions. The former Liverpool goalkeeper denied Nathaniel Brown in the 13th minute after Aleksandar Pavlovic provided the layoff. Karius’ most significant contribution arrived in the 87th minute when he produced a flying save to stop a goal-bound effort from Harry Kane, who had struck the ball from outside the penalty area. The England captain had started the match on the bench alongside Michael Olise before being introduced for the second half.

Musiala Returns Following Neurological Issues

Jamal Musiala made his return to competitive action as a 57th-minute substitute, entering the pitch at the same time as Olise. The 23-year-old midfielder had been sidelined after collapsing twice within four days during August friendlies against RB Leipzig and Heidenheim. These incidents were attributed to a neurological issue that causes seizures. Despite the medical history, Vincent Kompany stated in his pre-match news conference that there would be no cause for concern if the player were to collapse again during play.

Bayern struggled to convert possession into clear-cut opportunities throughout the contest. In the 8th minute, left-back Alphonso Davies rolled a cross-shot just wide of the far post. Later in the first half, Luis Díaz wasted a significant chance four minutes before the interval. After being played through by Brown, Díaz sent his attempt high and wide of the target. Early in the second half, Olise forced a save from Karius’ leg immediately after Díaz had missed another scoring opportunity.

Schalke Defensive Resilience

Schalke’s defensive efforts included a successful appeal against a potential handball by Dayot Upamecano in the box. Manuel Neuer was forced into his first major save in the 36th minute, punching away a near-post free-kick delivered by Adil Aouchiche. As the match progressed, Konrad Laimer attempted to break the tie but lashed his shot wide as Bayern increased the offensive pressure.

The goalless result is the first time Bayern Munich have been shut out in a Bundesliga match since facing Bayer Leverkusen more than 18 months ago. While Kompany’s side dominated late stages, Schalke repelled every attack to secure the point. The match also featured a shot from Olise that was blocked by Karius as the visitors sought to maintain their position at the summit of the league, a status they have now relinquished following the dropped points at Schalke.
