Kawhi Leonard has completed medical treatment for left knee swelling and is beginning a "return to play process" in Toronto, the Raptors announced on Tuesday. The 35-year-old forward has been sidelined after appearing in only two regular-season games this year. An MRI conducted last month on the joint revealed no structural damage. The team stated it will provide a status update following a reevaluation in one week.
In his two appearances this season, Leonard averaged 19.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 3.5 steals per game. This stint marks his first year back with the franchise after signing a two-year, $115 million contract extension following an offseason trade from the Los Angeles Clippers. While his current injury affects his left knee, Leonard has a history of multiple surgeries involving the ACL and meniscus in his right knee.
Leonard previously played for Toronto during the 2018-19 season, where he led the organization to its only NBA championship. He subsequently spent six seasons with the Clippers before returning to the Raptors this past offseason.
