Keisean Nixon Starter Hopes Uncertain Despite 15 Pass Breakups

Keisean Nixon led the NFL with 15 pass breakups last season, yet Green Bay Packers coaches have declared an open competition for his starting cornerback role.

Green Bay Packers cornerback Keisean Nixon, a Pro Bowl alternate last season, faces an uncertain future as an opening-day starter as training camp progresses. Nixon led the NFL with 15 pass breakups last year, but he also recorded 13 penalties, the highest total among all defensive backs when including both accepted and declined infractions. During Sunday's practice on August 16, 2026, Nixon was flagged for pass interference on a deep ball intended for Matthew Golden. This follows a preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers where the eight-year veteran missed a tackle, adding to scrutiny regarding his performance near the goal line during a playoff loss to the Chicago Bears.

Coach Matt LaFleur and the defensive staff have categorized the cornerback depth chart as an open competition. Nixon, who is scheduled to earn $5 million this season, has seen his role fluctuate significantly during camp. While he worked exclusively with the first-team defense during Sunday’s session, he spent the previous week relegated to snaps with the second- and third-string units. The veteran defensive back noted that he does not know why he is being evaluated this way, stating, "I guess I'm being punished right now, I guess, I don't know."

Roster Additions and Training Camp Competition

The Packers have introduced significant competition to the secondary, most notably through the NFL Draft and free agency. The team utilized their top selection, a second-round pick at No. 52 overall, on cornerback Brandon Cisse. Cisse has received the most repetitions at the cornerback position opposite Nixon thus far. Additionally, Green Bay signed veteran free agent Benjamin St-Juste, who has also earned snaps with the starting defensive unit. Carrington Valentine, who started 11 games for the franchise last season, remains in the mix but has been limited by a hamstring injury during camp.

Nixon transitioned to a full-time outside cornerback role last year after previously serving the team as a slot defender and primary kick returner. Despite his $5 million salary sitting at the lower end of the starting cornerback pay scale, he has not been guaranteed a spot in the lineup. The coaching staff is prioritizing specific traits in their evaluation, with LaFleur emphasizing that the team needs corners who are willing and capable tacklers in both the passing and running games.

Coaching Expectations and Defensive Standards

Matt LaFleur detailed the criteria for the starting roles on Sunday, explaining that the evaluation starts with correct assignments and extends to a player's style of play. The staff is looking for defenders who "stick their nose in there" and compete for the ball consistently. Nixon expressed that he remains focused on his own process despite the uncertainty, claiming he does not view himself as being in a competition because he can only control his own actions.

"Since I've been here, I ain't been off the field," Nixon said, highlighting his durability and willingness to play special teams or any other role assigned. He mentioned that he finds out about his role changes daily and simply attacks whatever reps he is given. The veteran emphasized his history of showing up and playing at a high level, regardless of whether he was working in the slot or on the perimeter. As the Packers move closer to the regular season, the distribution of reps between Nixon, Cisse, and St-Juste will determine the final configuration of the Green Bay secondary.
