The Seattle Seahawks officially transitioned to new ownership as the Khosla family closed a record-breaking $9.612 billion acquisition of the NFL franchise.
The Seattle Seahawks officially finalized the sale of the franchise from the estate of Paul Allen to a group led by the Khosla family on Thursday. This transaction follows a unanimous vote by NFL owners on August 26 to approve the $9.612 billion purchase price, establishing a new record for the most expensive sale of a professional football team. The deal transitions the Super Bowl champions into a new era under the leadership of Vinod Khosla, Neeru Khosla, and Neal Khosla.
Vinod Khosla, recognized as the founder of Khosla Ventures and co-founder of Sun Microsystems, assumes the title of chair for the organization. Neeru Khosla is designated as the controlling owner and will serve as the president of the Seahawks Charitable Foundation. Neal Khosla takes on the role of vice chair within the leadership structure. The family expressed their intent to build upon the franchise’s championship culture and deep connection to the Pacific Northwest fans known as the 12s.
Ownership Group Details and Transition
The acquisition group includes a diverse list of investors such as Mark Stevens, the Aramburuzabala family, Val Blavatnik, and Sheryl Sokoloff. Additional partners named in the Thursday announcement are Gonzalo Hevia Baillères, Jesse van der Werf, Samir Kaul, Sunny Gupta, Nader Naini, and Penny Pritzker. Institutional investment firms Carlyle, Dynasty Equity, and Sixth Street are also part of the new ownership collective. This group succeeds Jody Allen, who managed the team after the 2018 passing of her brother, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.
Vinod Khosla publicly indicated via social media on Wednesday that he would like Jody Allen to participate in the ceremonial raising of the 12 Flag. This tradition is scheduled to take place before the team’s season opener at Lumen Field. The upcoming game features a matchup against the New England Patriots, serving as a rematch of Super Bowl LX.
Official Introduction at Lumen Field
A formal news conference to introduce the new owners is scheduled for next Wednesday at the Seahawks' home stadium. The transition marks the end of the Allen estate's tenure, which began when Paul Allen purchased the team to prevent it from relocating. The Khosla family issued a statement thanking the investors and supporters who assisted throughout the multi-billion dollar sale process.
Upcoming Season Opener and Legacy
As the team prepares for its first game under this new leadership, the focus remains on the legacy of winning football established in Seattle. The record-setting $9.612 billion valuation reflects the current financial landscape of the NFL. The Khosla family has committed to engaging with the local community as they take control of the Pacific Northwest's premier sports franchise. The sale closure on September 3, 2026, officially begins the tenure of the first new ownership group in Seattle in over three decades.
