Sacramento Kings guard Ben Simmons sustained a torn Achilles tendon during a live drill at Sunday's practice and will undergo surgery, the team announced. The injury is likely season-ending for the 30-year-old veteran, who had recently joined the franchise on a one-year, $3.5 million contract signed on Sept. 4.
Simmons appeared in two preseason games for Sacramento prior to the injury, averaging 10.5 points in 17.5 minutes of play. The 6-foot-10, 240-pound guard was expected to serve as a versatile backup to rookie point guard Darius Acuff Jr., with the capacity to play positions one through five.
General manager Scott Perry and coach Doug Christie initially recruited the three-time All-Star following an in-depth medical exam and an on-court workout in Sacramento last month. Simmons had previously met with Perry for an hourlong session in Miami during late August to secure the roster spot. In a statement released on social media, Simmons noted that while he has faced previous physical and mental challenges, he views this latest injury as a chapter in his journey rather than the end of his career.
