The New York Knicks raised their 2025-26 World Champions banner and a surprise NBA Cup banner before losing 106-100 to the Philadelphia 76ers.
The New York Knicks opened their season Tuesday at Madison Square Garden by raising two banners and receiving championship rings before losing 106-100 to the Philadelphia 76ers. Hall of Famer Walt Frazier presented the rings to the team, who wore white uniforms with gold trim. Jalen Brunson, the 2026 NBA Finals MVP, debuted gold sneakers for the ceremony, which marked the franchise's first championship celebration since 1973.
In addition to the "2025-26 World Champions" banner, the Knicks hung a second banner to commemorate their NBA Cup title from the previous December. The team had initially declined to hang a banner for the in-season tournament victory, but Coach Mike Brown noted the addition was a recognition of the team's full journey. Both titles were secured through victories over the San Antonio Spurs.
The pregame ceremony included a video montage featuring OG Anunoby’s tip-in with 1.2 seconds remaining in Game 4 of the Finals, a play that completed a comeback from a 29-point deficit. Despite the festivities, the Knicks started the new campaign 0-1. Forward Josh Hart remarked after the six-point loss that the team must move past the celebration, noting they are currently at the bottom of the league standings.
