One Eastern Conference executive described the acquisition of James on a minimum deal as "outstanding," while noting the risk involved in trading for Jaylen Brown. The veteran forward brings championship experience to a locker room where Embiid is currently on the wrong side of 30 with knees requiring careful management. James previously considered joining Philadelphia in 2018 before signing with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he recently led a first-round upset of the Houston Rockets while Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves were sidelined with injuries.

Paul clarified that while Miami was considered, James ultimately felt he could not duplicate his previous success there. The Warriors were only viewed as a viable option if they had acquired Washington Wizards forward Anthony Davis, James' teammate during his 2020 title run.
