Leigh Wood retained his WBA world featherweight title by stopping Josh Warrington in the final second of the seventh round at the Utilita Arena Sheffield.
Leigh Wood secured a dramatic technical knockout victory over Josh Warrington at exactly 3:00 of the seventh round to retain his WBA world featherweight championship. The Nottingham-born fighter overcame a significant deficit on the official scorecards, where he trailed 59-55, 59-55, and 58-56 at the time of the stoppage. A devastating right hook followed by a flurry of six unanswered punches sent Warrington to the canvas in the closing moments of the frame. Although the challenger regained his feet, referee Michael Alexander waved off the contest as the bell sounded, ending the bout held at the Utilita Arena Sheffield.
Warrington established early dominance by landing 22 power punches in the opening three rounds compared to Wood's 11. The Leeds fighter utilized a high-volume approach, targeting the champion's body with 14 successful strikes during the fourth round alone. Wood suffered a point deduction in the seventh round for repeated punches to the back of the head, a penalty that widened the scoring gap before the final sequence. Despite this setback, the champion's punch accuracy improved to 34% in the sixth round, setting the stage for his come-from-behind triumph.
The statistical breakdown reveals that Warrington outlanded Wood 84 to 61 in total strikes over the course of the seven completed segments. Wood’s jab success rate remained low at 12%, yet his power punching proved decisive, accounting for 48 of his total landed blows. The challenger’s aggression was reflected in his 215 total punches thrown, maintaining a pace of over 30 attempts per round. However, the final right-hand lead from Wood registered as the most impactful shot of the night, leading to the first stoppage loss of Warrington's professional career.
On the undercard, Terri Harper and Cecilia Braekhus fought to a majority draw for the WBA and WBO women's super-welterweight titles. The judges turned in scores of 95-95 twice, while a third official saw it 97-93 in favor of Harper. Braekhus, the 42-year-old veteran, landed 98 total punches throughout the ten-round affair, while Harper countered with 92 of her own. This result left the vacant WBO belt without a holder, as neither fighter could secure the required edge on the cards.
Earlier in the evening, Hopey Price extended his undefeated record to 12-0 by stopping Connor Coghill in the twelfth round of their featherweight eliminator. Price scored four knockdowns in total, including two in the sixth round and two in the final stanza before the referee intervened at 1:29. Additionally, Kieron Conway secured a sixth-round retirement victory over Linus Udofia after Udofia suffered a suspected fractured eye socket. Conway landed 42% of his power shots during the middle rounds, forcing Udofia's corner to pull their fighter from the contest before the start of the seventh.
