Lionel Messi Fined for Neck Contact in Inter Miami's 2-2 Draw With Philadelphia

Lionel Messi and Ian Fray received undisclosed MLS fines following separate incidents in stoppage time of a 2-2 draw against Philadelphia.

Major League Soccer announced Friday that Inter Miami's Lionel Messi and Ian Fray have been fined undisclosed amounts following a 2-2 draw against Philadelphia. The disciplinary actions stem from separate incidents involving contact in the head and neck area of opponents during second-half stoppage time on Wednesday night. Messi recorded a goal and an assist in the match, marking his first scoring contribution since the passing of his father, Jorge Messi.

During the final minutes of play, Messi slapped Union midfielder Quinn Sullivan on the back of the neck while the two players exchanged words. This physical altercation occurred amidst a high-tension finish that saw multiple disciplinary reviews from the league office. The match concluded with two red cards issued during the stoppage-time period to Miami’s Yannick Bright and Philadelphia’s Cavan Sullivan, the younger brother of Quinn, following an off-the-ball scuffle.

Stoppage Time Altercations and Fray Sanction

Ian Fray’s fine resulted from a confrontation that also involved Quinn Sullivan in the penalty area. After Sullivan lost his footing while dribbling, he became entangled with Fray, who subsequently grabbed the Union player by the neck. In response to the contact, Sullivan jumped up and tackled the Miami defender. The league’s review of these specific movements led to the financial penalties issued to both Miami players on August 21, 2026.

Despite the initial on-field ruling, MLS confirmed Friday that the Independent Review Panel voted unanimously to overturn the red card and one-game suspension previously handed to Cavan Sullivan. The panel's decision allows the younger Sullivan to avoid serving a ban for the scuffle that took place at the conclusion of the game. Yannick Bright’s disciplinary status remained unchanged in the league’s Friday update.

League-Wide Disciplinary Rulings

The disciplinary announcements extended beyond the Inter Miami and Philadelphia fixture. Minnesota United defender Anthony Markanich received a fine for embellishment during the second half of his team's 2-1 loss to Atlanta United, which also took place on Wednesday. The league did not disclose the specific dollar amounts for any of the fines issued to Markanich, Messi, or Fray.

Messi’s performance on the pitch included his first goal of the 2026 season following his recent personal bereavement. The striker, who has been the subject of a dedicated tracker for all goals and assists for both Miami and Argentina, also provided a key pass that resulted in an assist during the four-goal draw. The match was characterized by late-game volatility, leading to the striker describing a separate head injury incident as feeling like a television being turned off.

Independent Review Panel Findings

The unanimous vote to rescind Cavan Sullivan’s sanction highlights the league's process for correcting on-field officiating errors through secondary footage analysis. While the red card for the off-the-ball scuffle was dismissed, the fines for Messi and Fray stand as final rulings regarding player conduct in the head and neck region. These incidents occurred exclusively within the added time of the second half, transforming a 2-2 deadlock into a series of disciplinary investigations by the MLS headquarters.
