Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi arrived in Oviedo on Thursday to receive the Princess of Asturias award for sport. The 39-year-old Argentina icon, who recently retired from international duty with 126 goals in 208 appearances, will attend a ceremony on Friday presided over by the King and Queen of Spain. Accompanied by his wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, the former Barcelona captain signed autographs for hundreds of fans outside his hotel.
The Princess of Asturias foundation selected the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner for his sporting consistency and his charitable efforts regarding healthcare and education for disadvantaged children. Messi told EFE that the recognition made his father, Jorge, very happy prior to his passing on Aug. 8. The 2022 World Cup winner spent 20 years at FC Barcelona, where he won two Copa América titles and became the player with the most trophies in football history.
During his visit, Messi emphasized the responsibilities and values instilled in him during his two decades in Spain. He noted that the award carries significant prestige beyond his performance on the pitch. This trip marks a return to the country where he played the majority of his professional career before moving to Major League Soccer.
