Liverpool have finalized the signing of Barcelona captain Ronald Araújo on a season-long loan that includes a €55 million permanent transfer option. The move follows a 3-2 preseason loss to Monaco on Sunday and a 4-2 defeat against Leeds United last week, both matches in which Andoni Iraola’s side surrendered 2-0 leads. Araújo becomes the club's third summer arrival after Jérémy Jacquet and Víctor Muñoz joined for a combined fee exceeding €100 million. While Liverpool will cover the defender's wages, the 27-year-old Uruguay international accepted a pay cut to facilitate the move to Anfield.

Araújo arrives with a resume featuring 200 appearances for Barcelona, a milestone reached during a 3-0 victory over Atlético Madrid in March. During the 2024 Champions League quarterfinals, PSG manager Luis Enrique instructed his players to pressure the defender specifically, labeling him the player with the "most problems" when in possession. Additionally, Araújo has a history of disciplinary issues, including a red card on his Barcelona debut against Sevilla in October 2019 and subsequent dismissals in European competition against Paris Saint-Germain.
