Ludvig Aberg holds a three-stroke lead at 13-under 203 following a third-round 71 that included his third eagle of the week.
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- Ludvig Aberg carded a 1-under 71 on Saturday at TPC Sawgrass to reach a 13-under 203 total, establishing a three-shot lead heading into the final round of The Players Championship. The 26-year-old Swede, who previously shot a 63 in the second round, recorded his third eagle of the week on the 11th hole. Despite a three-putt bogey on the 18th hole to close his round, Aberg expanded his advantage from two strokes to three over the field. He missed late scoring opportunities on the par-5 16th, where he hit a 7-iron from 193 yards to the green, and the par-3 17th, where he failed to convert an 8-foot birdie putt.
Michael Thorbjornsen moved into the final group alongside Aberg after posting a 5-under 67. Thorbjornsen sits three strokes back and aims to become the first player since Craig Perks in 2002 to win the event in his debut appearance. Both Aberg and Thorbjornsen previously held the No. 1 spot in the PGA Tour University rankings to secure their tour cards. Thorbjornsen, a Stanford product who lives in the Ponte Vedra area, noted the difficulty of the Stadium Course, questioning if any player managed a bogey-free round during the second or third days of competition.
Cameron Young and Late-Round Volatility
Cameron Young finished his third round four shots off the lead at 9-under par following a 72. Young reached the 18th tee trailing by only two strokes but suffered a double bogey on the closing hole. His drive on the 18th found the water on the left, and his third shot landed in rough-covered moguls. After chipping across the firm green into a bunker, he salvaged the hole by sinking an 8-foot putt. Earlier in the day, Young recorded a 45-foot birdie on the 13th and hit the day's closest shot on the 17th, a fatted wedge that stopped within 2 feet of the cup.
Young remains optimistic despite never finishing inside the top 50 in his three previous appearances at this tournament. He cited Robert MacIntyre’s 65, the lowest score recorded on Saturday, as evidence that low numbers are achievable on the final day. The leaderboard behind Young is crowded at 8-under 208, featuring a six-way tie for fifth place. This group includes Matt Fitzpatrick, Brian Harman, and Viktor Hovland, who all shot 69, alongside Corey Conners (72), Justin Thomas (72), and Xander Schauffele (74).
Justin Thomas and Xander Schauffele Struggles
Justin Thomas experienced a turbulent round to finish five strokes behind Aberg. Playing his second tournament since undergoing lower back surgery in November, Thomas incurred a triple bogey on the sixth hole after hitting into the water, the rough, and over the green. He found the water again on the reachable par-4 12th but recovered with two late birdies to finish at even-par for the day. Thomas previously shot a 62 at this venue last year, highlighting the scoring potential he hopes to replicate on Sunday.
Xander Schauffele, who played in the final Saturday pairing, struggled with accuracy, hitting only eight greens in regulation. His round of 74 included just a single birdie. The difficult conditions at the Stadium Course meant that few players avoided significant errors, as the firm and fast greens penalized errant approach shots. Schauffele enters the final 18 holes in the 8-under par cluster, needing to overcome a five-shot deficit to catch the leader.
Final Round Pairings and Course Context
The final pairing features two former elite college players who frequently practice together in the local area. Aberg, a Texas Tech alumnus who played in the Ryder Cup only four months after leaving college in 2023, will face off against Thorbjornsen, who hails from the Boston area. While both players reside near the course, they noted that the TPC Sawgrass layout is rarely maintained in its current tournament condition during the rest of the year. Aberg entered the day with a two-shot cushion and expressed minor frustration regarding his closing three-putt, yet he remains the only player in double digits under par heading into the final 18 holes.
