Alexis Mac Allister scored a header and a second-half strike to help Liverpool overcome an early deficit in a 4-3 win against Villareal.
Liverpool secured a 4-3 Champions League victory against Villareal on Tuesday night at Anfield. Alexis Mac Allister scored twice for the hosts, including a header that reduced an early two-goal deficit. Ronald Araújo provided the equalizer before Mac Allister added his second goal following an assist from Rio Ngumoha. Florian Wirtz recorded Liverpool's fourth goal, while Tani Oluwaseyi scored the final goal for Villareal to bring the score to 4-3.
Following the match, Mac Allister told Amazon Prime that manager Andoni Iraola has implemented a man-to-man defensive system, replacing the zonal approach used by predecessor Arne Slot. The midfielder noted that the new tactics require players to communicate less but run more. Mac Allister stated that the group experienced a difficult previous campaign, finishing fifth in the Premier League after winning the title the year prior.
Iraola’s side remains perfect in the Champions League following the comeback. Mac Allister highlighted the performance of Ngumoha, who set up the second goal with a low cross. The Argentine international noted his preference for attacking the near post, a trait he compared to his father’s playing style and his own scoring record during the World Cup.
