Alexis Mac Allister scored a 50th-minute winning goal from outside the box to lead Liverpool to a 2-1 victory against Atlético Madrid.

Alexis Mac Allister scored the decisive goal in the 50th minute to secure Liverpool’s 2-1 Champions League victory over Atlético Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday. After Marcos Llorente opened the scoring for the visitors in the 17th minute, Dominik Szoboszlai equalized for the hosts in the 40th minute. Mac Allister then provided the winner five minutes after halftime, striking a powerful shot from outside the penalty area past goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

The result marked the first career victory for Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola against Diego Simeone, following a previous record of three losses and one draw. For Atlético, Llorente’s opening goal was his fifth in his last three appearances at Anfield. Argentina international Julián Álvarez started for the Spanish side following a summer period where he attempted to secure a transfer to Barcelona.

According to ESPN, Mac Allister’s performance followed pre-match comments expressing disappointment regarding the lack of a contract extension offer from Liverpool. While the midfielder’s current deal runs until 2028, he told ESPN Argentina that he intends to give his all until his last day at the club. The 25-year-old has been with the Premier League side since joining in 2023.
