Manchester United Evaluating Replacements as Michael Carrick's Future Remains in Doubt

Manchester United are considering Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann as potential head coaches following a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth.

Manchester United lost 3-0 to Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday, leaving the club 16th in the Premier League and one point above the relegation zone. According to sources told to ESPN, the result has placed head coach Michael Carrick’s future in serious doubt. This defeat follows a 4-1 loss to Como in the Champions League on Wednesday, extending United's winless run to eight matches across all competitions.

Club hierarchy are currently weighing replacements, with former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe and former Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann identified as contenders. Both coaches are presently out of work. Antonio Conte, who departed Napoli in the summer, is reportedly open to discussions if contacted by the club. Additionally, the club previously held talks with former Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna in the summer of 2024 before opting to retain Erik ten Hag.

Carrick, 45, signed a two-year contract in May following a spell as interim manager. While sources indicate the club has conducted due diligence on several coaches to prepare for a potential change, defender Harry Maguire stated that the players remain fully behind the current head coach. Speaking after the Bournemouth match, Carrick noted he was carrying on as normal and was not expecting anything in particular regarding his job status.
