Masyn Winn Hits 10-Day IL With Broken Thumb; Nolan Gorman Recalled

Shortstop Masyn Winn was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday after suffering a broken left thumb on a slide against Cincinnati.

ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals placed shortstop Masyn Winn on the 10-day injured list Tuesday due to a broken left thumb. The injury, which occurred during a slide into second base against Cincinnati last week, is retroactive to Saturday. Winn currently leads the league with 317 assists and 86 double plays turned while maintaining a .238 batting average. The reigning NL Gold Glove winner at shortstop has also recorded five home runs and 51 RBI during the 2026 campaign.

Winn had been absent from the starting lineup for four consecutive games prior to the roster move. His only recent appearance occurred Friday during a loss at Philadelphia, where he played defense but did not record an at-bat. The shortstop expressed optimism regarding his recovery timeline, noting he expects to rejoin the team during next week's West Coast road trip after missing the current homestand. "I'm glad it's not something worse than what it is," Winn stated, emphasizing the team's urgent need for victories.

Nolan Gorman Returns from Triple-A Memphis

In a corresponding move, the Cardinals recalled infielder Nolan Gorman from Triple-A Memphis. Gorman was immediately inserted into the number six spot in the batting order for Tuesday’s series opener against the visiting Baltimore Orioles. The infielder originally began the season as the starting third baseman in St. Louis but was demoted in early June. At the time of his optioning, he was hitting .194 with seven home runs and 26 RBI.

During his stint in Triple-A, Gorman struggled with a .182 overall batting average while attempting to make adjustments to his swing. However, his power has surged recently, as he has launched seven home runs in just 63 at-bats during the month of August. Manager Oliver Marmol noted that Gorman expressed increased confidence in his work and execution inside the batter's box during a conversation held approximately four or five days ago.

Before the injury, Winn's league-leading 317 assists solidified his status as a premier defender in the National League.
