Michael Penix Jr. left Sunday's 30-23 overtime loss against the Baltimore Ravens late in the fourth quarter following a rib injury.
The Atlanta Falcons fell 30-23 to the Baltimore Ravens in an overtime contest on Sunday night. Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. exited the game late in the fourth quarter after being sacked by linebacker Tavius Robinson with 27 seconds remaining. Before his departure, Penix completed 19-of-32 passes for 240 yards and one touchdown without an interception.
According to Marc Raimondi of ESPN, Penix briefly left the field but returned for one play before the game headed into overtime. However, he did not participate in the extra period as the pain worsened while sitting on the bench during a long Ravens drive. Backup Tua Tagovailoa replaced him and threw a game-ending interception to Kyle Hamilton with 2:11 left in overtime.
Coach Kevin Stefanski noted that Penix struggled to get comfortable on the sideline following the hit. Despite the exit, Penix stated he does not believe the rib injury will be a long-term issue and expects to be ready for next week's game. This injury follows his recent return in Week 3 from a third career ACL surgery.
The Falcons offense, which averaged eight points per game under third-stringer Cooper Rush during the first two weeks, has scored 80 total points in the two starts since Penix returned to the lineup. Running back Bijan Robinson expressed hope that the injury is limited to a bruise.
