Mitchell, Spieth Miss Top 50 as McNealy Claims Final FedEx Cup Playoff Spot

Keith Mitchell finished 7.819 points shy of the BMW Championship after a bogey on the 18th hole at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

Keith Mitchell finished 51st in the points standings, missing the BMW Championship by 7.819 points after a final-round bogey at TPC Southwind. Jordan Spieth concluded his season in 52nd place following a final-round 70, leaving both players outside the top 50 cutoff required to advance in the FedEx Cup playoffs. Maverick McNealy secured the final postseason berth at No. 50 after carding a 69 to tie for 19th place, benefiting from a bogey-free back nine that included two birdies. The top 50 players following Sunday's event earned guaranteed entry into next week's second playoff event and all $20 million signature events for the upcoming year.

Mitchell’s Final Hole Struggle

Keith Mitchell entered the 18th hole needing a par or better but found the hazard left of the fairway with his 3-wood tee shot. After removing his shoes and socks to stand in calf-deep water for his second shot, the ball bounced short and rolled off the bank back into the water. Mitchell recorded no birdies on the back nine Sunday and finished with a 5 on the closing hole. He noted that he was unaware of his exact standing until leaving the 17th green, where he realized he was one point back. Despite striking his 3-wood well, a gust of wind caused the ball to fall short of his target.

Spieth’s Back Nine Decline

Jordan Spieth reached the turn at 2-under par for the day, momentarily climbing to No. 45 in the projected standings. His momentum stalled with consecutive bogeys on the 11th and 12th holes. Although a birdie on the 13th provided a reprieve, Spieth required four pars over the final four holes to secure his first BMW Championship appearance since 2023. On the 15th, his drive landed in the water, resulting in a bogey. He subsequently missed a 15-foot birdie opportunity on the par-5 16th after his chip from behind the green rolled off the putting surface. A second 15-foot birdie attempt failed to drop on the 17th.

On the 18th hole, Spieth played from a patch of dirt right of the fairway to a position just over the green. He attempted a 35-foot putt that finished short of the cup, resulting in a par. Spieth remarked that he felt his game was close to improving, but acknowledged he would not play another tournament for a significant period. He finished tied for 19th in the tournament, the same position as McNealy, but his cumulative points were insufficient to crack the top 50.

Playoff Field Finalized

Maverick McNealy entered the week ranked 63rd in the 69-man field but moved up to the bubble throughout Sunday afternoon. His 1-under 69 allowed him to claim the final qualifying spot for the event in St. Louis. Brian Harman also failed to advance, dropping to 65th in the standings after a final-round 75. The FedEx Cup playoffs now transition to the BMW Championship, where the remaining field will compete for a spot in the Tour Championship. Mitchell expressed that he could have opted for a safer layup to the right on the 18th if he had been securely inside the cut line, but his aggressive play was dictated by his one-point deficit.
