The 28-year-old All-Star, who holds a 14-5 record with a 2.87 ERA this season, was scratched from a scheduled start Saturday night against the Atlanta Braves due to persistent stiffness. Manager Don Mattingly opted for caution to prevent the issue from lingering as the team pursues a wild-card spot.

Tim Mayza started in place of Luzardo during the 12-2 loss to Atlanta, pitching three innings while allowing no runs and two hits with four strikeouts. Luzardo’s most recent performance prior to the injury was a 12-strikeout shutout against the Braves. According to ESPN, Mattingly indicated that while the team initially expected the left-hander to make his start, he was not physically ready to compete by Saturday.
