Newcastle United struck twice in the second half through Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa to condemn Tottenham to a 2-0 defeat.
Newcastle United secured a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, leaving the hosts winless after two Premier League fixtures. Anthony Elanga broke the scoreless deadlock in the 62nd minute, sending a strike off the inside of the post and into the net. This effort marked Elanga’s second goal in two matches, following his successful strike against Liverpool during the Magpies' season opener last weekend. Ten minutes after the opening goal, Yoane Wissa doubled the lead in the 72nd minute with a superb overhead kick from close range.
This result represents a second consecutive league defeat for Tottenham, who have now conceded five goals without scoring a single one across their first two matches of the campaign. The loss also marks the first home defeat for manager Roberto De Zerbi since he took charge of the club in March. Despite progressing in the Carabao Cup during the midweek and confirming the high-profile signings of Sávio and Omar Marmoush, Spurs were unable to improve upon a record that saw them win only three league games at home throughout the entirety of last season.
Elanga and Wissa Secure Clinical Victory
The match remained a cagey affair during the first half, with neither side establishing dominance before the interval. However, Newcastle proved clinical in the second period, punishing the hosts despite a summer transfer window defined by the departures of Bruno Guimarães, Sandro Tonali, and Anthony Gordon. Elanga’s 62nd-minute goal shifted the momentum, and Wissa’s acrobatic finish ten minutes later ensured Spurs had no reply.
Tottenham utilized several of their major summer acquisitions during the contest. Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali, Jan Paul Van Hecke, and Omar Marmoush all featured in the match. However, new signing Sávio was absent from the matchday squad. Roberto De Zerbi confirmed following the whistle that the player was sidelined due to muscle fatigue resulting from his participation in the midweek Carabao Cup fixture.
Mohammed Kudus Returns to Action
A significant positive for the North London side was the return of Mohammed Kudus, who made his first appearance for the team since January. Kudus was introduced as a substitute following Elanga’s opening goal. The club and its supporters are now monitoring his fitness levels to determine if he will be available to start the upcoming league match against Nottingham Forest.
De Zerbi’s Home Record Struggles
While Spurs entered the game with momentum from their midweek cup progression, their league form remains stagnant. The 2-0 scoreline highlights ongoing defensive vulnerabilities, as the team has failed to find the back of the net in 180 minutes of Premier League football this season. Newcastle, by contrast, capitalized on their opportunities to secure three points away from home, building on their previous performance against Liverpool. The Magpies managed to overcome the loss of key personnel from their roster to remain effective in the final third, leaving Tottenham to reflect on a wretched run of form at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
