Reigning league MVP Nikita Kucherov, who has 15 points through 12 games this season, has requested a trade from the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Nikita Kucherov has requested a trade from the Tampa Bay Lightning, sources told ESPN on Friday night. The 33-year-old forward, who is the reigning Hart Trophy winner and a three-time Art Ross Trophy recipient, reportedly informed his teammates of the decision on the team plane Friday. Kucherov is currently in the final season of an eight-year, $76 million contract that carries a $9.5 million average annual value. Negotiations for an extension reached an impasse on Friday after the two sides remained far apart on a deal that could potentially double his current salary.
The Russian-born winger has spent his entire 14-year career in Tampa Bay, recently becoming the franchise's all-time leading scorer. Through 12 games this season, he has recorded four goals and 11 assists for 15 total points. The Lightning currently hold an 8-3-1 record and sit third in the Atlantic Division. Kucherov possesses a modified no-trade clause, which requires him to provide a list of 10 approved teams to the organization. Sources indicate he is interested in playing alongside another of the NHL's top superstars.
General manager Julien BriseBois and agent Dan Milstein did not immediately comment on the development, which was first reported by Sportsnet. The Lightning are scheduled to play the Nashville Predators on Saturday. Kucherov previously led the franchise to consecutive Stanley Cup championships in 2020 and 2021.
