World No. 118 Alina Charaeva upset top-ranked Elena Rybakina 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 on Saturday at the China Open. Rybakina, the recently crowned US Open champion, committed seven double faults and lost her serve five times during the match. The defeat makes her only the second woman, following Naomi Osaka in 2019, to lose an opening match after ascending to the world No. 1 ranking. Charaeva secured the final break of the third set to lead 4-2 before closing out the victory.
In second-round action, Coco Gauff defeated Camila Osorio 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-2. This victory marked Gauff's first appearance since her US Open semifinal loss to Rybakina on Sept. 11. The 128-draw WTA 1000 tournament is scheduled to conclude in Beijing on Oct. 11.
During the concurrent ATP 500 event, top seed Alexander Zverev moved into the quarterfinals by beating wild-card Shang Juncheng 6-0, 6-3. Zverev will next face Novak Djokovic. Other men's results included third-seeded Daniil Medvedev defeating Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4, 6-3, while Alex de Minaur overcame Quentin Halys with a score of 3-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5.
