Pat Murphy Questions Milwaukee Brewers Record After Historic 22-0 Shutout

The Milwaukee Brewers matched a modern MLB record for the most lopsided shutout win by defeating the Seattle Mariners 22-0 on Tuesday.

MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee Brewers matched the most lopsided shutout victory in modern MLB history on Tuesday by defeating the Seattle Mariners 22-0. Despite holding the best record in the major leagues, two-time reigning NL manager of the year Pat Murphy stated on Wednesday that he does not believe his team has played great or fully jelled. The victory followed a series win at Los Angeles where Milwaukee took three of four games against the two-time defending World Series champion Dodgers. The Brewers currently lead the NL Central by five games after the Chicago Cubs lost 3-0 to the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday afternoon.

Pitching Staff Performance and Roster Moves

Milwaukee recently completed a grueling 17-day stretch without a day off, finishing with a 10-7 record during a period that included two West Coast trips. Rookie pitcher Logan Henderson, who the club retained following the July trade deadline, improved his season record to 7-2 with a 2.70 ERA after outdueling Tarik Skubal in Sunday’s 6-2 series finale win against the Dodgers. While the Brewers failed to acquire Skubal from the Detroit Tigers—who instead traded the two-time AL Cy Young winner to Los Angeles—the team pivoted by acquiring former St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Dustin May.

Left-hander Kyle Harrison, another first-year member of the Milwaukee rotation, credited pitching coaches Chris Hook, Jim Henderson, and Juan Sandoval for the staff's success. The current rotation features NL Cy Young front-runner Jacob Misiorowski alongside Henderson, Harrison, and May. This group has maintained the team's standing despite season-ending injuries to two-time All-Star Brandon Woodruff and the total absence of Quinn Priester this year.

Offensive Production and Leadership

The Brewers lineup has produced the fewest home runs in the major leagues this season, yet the team remains among the top five in total scoring. First baseman Jake Bauers is experiencing a breakthrough season, helping the offense overcome statistical declines from 2018 NL MVP Christian Yelich and three-time All-Star William Contreras. Murphy noted that while some veteran leaders are not currently producing statistical results, their ability to handle the clubhouse remains a key factor in the team's consistency.

Milwaukee is pursuing its fourth consecutive NL Central title and its eighth playoff appearance in the last nine years. The franchise has not reached the World Series since 1982 and is still seeking its first championship. Murphy expressed surprise at public praise for the team's style of play, suggesting he may be too critical of a roster that he nonetheless trusts to bounce back from difficult stretches, such as their recent sweep at the hands of San Diego.

Upcoming Divisional Schedule

The divisional race intensifies as the Brewers prepare for a four-game series against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field from Aug. 31 to Sept. 3. The two clubs will meet again shortly after for a three-game set in Milwaukee scheduled for Sept. 7-9. These matchups will be critical as the Brewers attempt to secure a postseason breakthrough that has eluded them during this era of sustained success. Murphy emphasized that the team's secret may be their ability to remain competitive and win games even when they are not performing at their absolute best.
