According to ESPN, the first baseman joined the last-place Orioles following the 2025 season on a five-year, $155 million contract after the New York Mets opted not to re-sign him. Alonso arrived in Queens hitting .269 with 35 home runs and an .863 OPS for the season.

The former Mets draft pick holds the New York franchise record with 264 home runs, surpassing Darryl Strawberry during his tenure. While Alonso entered the night with a 4.1 fWAR, the Mets replacements at his position combined for a minus-0.4 mark. The Mets began the Monday night contest on the verge of postseason elimination, having reached the playoffs twice during Alonso's time with the club.

Alonso is currently tied at 299 career home runs with former teammate Francisco Lindor. Per the Elias Sports Bureau, a home run on Monday would make Alonso only the third player to hit his 300th career homer against a team for which he played at least 1,000 games. He would join Willie Horton, who achieved the feat against the Tigers in 1979, and Torii Hunter, who did so against the Twins in 2013.

During pregame activities, Alonso exchanged greetings with owner Steve Cohen and infielder Jose Iglesias. Fans wearing his former No. 20 jersey provided a thunderous ovation and chanted his name during batting practice. Alonso noted he respects the Mets' decision to let him walk in free agency while expressing gratitude for his new tenure in Baltimore.
