Pete Crow-Armstrong Joins MLB 40/40 Club With 40th Stolen Base Against Marlins

Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong swiped his 40th base of the season against the Miami Marlins to become the seventh player in MLB history to reach the 40/40 mark.

Chicago Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong joined the 40/40 club on Thursday, stealing his 40th base of the season during the bottom of the first inning against the Miami Marlins. According to ESPN, the 24-year-old reached the milestone after drawing a leadoff walk against Marlins starter Tyler Phillips and stealing second on the first pitch to Seiya Suzuki. Crow-Armstrong entered the game with 45 home runs, making him just the third player in MLB history to record at least 45 homers and 40 steals in a single season, alongside Shohei Ohtani and Alfonso Soriano.

This achievement marks the second consecutive year Crow-Armstrong has reached the 30/30 plateau. The center fielder has established new career highs in both major categories this season, surpassing his 2025 totals of 31 home runs and 35 stolen bases. He is now the seventh player to ever record a 40/40 season, joining a list that includes Jose Canseco (1988), Barry Bonds (1996), Alex Rodriguez (1998), Alfonso Soriano (2006), Ronald Acuna Jr. (2023), and Shohei Ohtani (2024).

Teammate Nico Hoerner noted that the crowd and the dugout acknowledged the feat during a brief pause in the game. Crow-Armstrong is currently considered the heavy favorite to win the National League MVP award following this statistical jump.
