PGA Tour Postseason to Feature 32-Player Match Play Bracket Starting in 2028

The PGA Tour postseason will undergo a massive overhaul in 2028, introducing a two-week match-play Tour Championship for the top 32 players.

PGA Tour commissioner and CEO Brian Rolapp will announce a restructured PGA Tour postseason on Tuesday at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, introducing a 72-hole stroke-play Championship Series finale followed by a two-week match-play Tour Championship. This new format, debuting after the 2028 regular season, will utilize the Championship Series finale to finalize the seasonlong points list and crown a champion before the top 32 golfers advance to a reimagined head-to-head bracket. The top 90 players on the points list following the finale will retain their tour cards for the subsequent season.

The final points list established at the conclusion of the 72-hole event determines bonus distributions and the seasonlong champion, creating a scenario where two different winners could be recognized in a single week. For instance, if Scottie Scheffler finishes third in the Championship Series finale but maintains the highest point total, he would be crowned the seasonlong champion despite not winning the tournament. This structure aims to reward consistent performance without using starting strokes or elevated points, addressing concerns from the Player Advisory Council regarding fair earnings distribution.

Group Stage and Bracket Mechanics

The top 32 golfers from the finalized points list will qualify for the Tour Championship, which spans two weeks at rotating venues. The opening week features a three-round group-stage competition where 32 players are divided into eight groups of four. Golfers will be seeded and play matches against the other three members of their specific group. The top two performers from each quartet advance to the second week. In the event of a tie at the end of group play, a playoff will determine which individuals move forward.

The 16 advancing golfers enter the second week in a first-of-its-kind match-play bracket. Advancement is based on win-loss records, culminating in a final match between the last two undefeated players to determine the Tour Championship winner. A player’s total win-loss record across all four rounds of the second week establishes the final leaderboard standings. Even a golfer who loses their initial two matches in the final week can secure a tie for sixth place by winning their subsequent two matches.

Player Feedback and Data Integration

Keith Mitchell, a member of the six-golfer Future Competition Committee, noted that players were initially "violently against" the proposal two years ago, fearing a single 13-hole or 18-hole match would unfairly dictate a season's income. The compromise to separate the seasonlong championship from the match-play event gained support by ensuring the regular-season champion is determined through traditional stroke play. Data provided by tour partners indicated that match play, a format already utilized in the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup, significantly increases fan engagement and television viewership.

This marks the first time match play will be part of the PGA Tour postseason and the first instance of head-to-head tour competition since the 2023 World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play in Austin, Texas. The tour believes the group-play format prevents a "one-and-done" scenario where a single high-scoring round by an opponent results in immediate elimination.

Schedule and Venue Rotation

The Championship Series will consist of up to 24 events, including 16 signature events, The Players Championship, and four majors. The season is scheduled to run from February through August, ensuring the postseason concludes before the start of the NFL regular season. Running concurrently, the Challenger Series will serve as the primary pathway for golfers to earn promotion to the Championship Series, including mid-season elevation for players who secure two victories.

Because of the limited 32-player field, the PGA Tour plans to rotate the Tour Championship annually among prestigious venues, including courses that have not traditionally hosted tour events. While no venues have been formally contracted, staff have conducted on-site visits to interested courses. The full lineup of venues and dates for the 2028 season is scheduled for announcement on Feb. 22, 2027.
