Phillies Claim Right-Hander José Urquidy Off Waivers

Philadelphia claimed pitcher José Urquidy from the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday to replace injured All-Star Jesús Luzardo.

The Philadelphia Phillies claimed right-handed pitcher José Urquidy off waivers from the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday. Manager Don Mattingly indicated the 31-year-old could debut as early as Friday against the New York Mets, either as a traditional starter or in a bulk relief role following an opener. Urquidy is expected to provide length for a pitching staff that requires approximately 70 to 75 pitches from a single arm to avoid a pure bullpen game.

This roster move follows the loss of All-Star Jesús Luzardo to the injured list due to left shoulder inflammation. Luzardo currently ranks in the National League's top 10 for wins (14), ERA (2.87), and strikeouts (221). To facilitate the addition, Philadelphia transferred right-hander Caleb Kilian to the 60-day injured list.

Urquidy enters the Phillies organization with a 2-2 record, a 5.28 ERA, and one save across 11 total appearances this season for the White Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates. His most recent outing occurred on Sept. 8, where he threw 45 pitches over four innings of relief, allowing two runs. The veteran has made only one start during the 2026 campaign.
