The transaction is retroactive to Saturday, making the pitcher eligible for reinstatement on Sept. 27, the final day of the regular season. Luzardo was previously scratched from a scheduled start against the Atlanta Braves three days ago and underwent an MRI on Saturday that revealed no serious structural issues.

Luzardo currently holds a 14-5 record with a 2.87 ERA and ranks second in the National League with a career-high 221 strikeouts across 29 starts. In his most recent outing on Sept. 7, he recorded his first career complete game, a two-hit shutout against Atlanta. Interim manager Don Mattingly stated that while the medical staff believes the pitcher is improving, he is not yet ready to return to the mound.

To fill the vacant roster spot, Philadelphia recalled right-hander Grant Holman from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Holman has made one appearance for the Phillies this season, where he recorded one out and allowed five unearned runs. The move comes as Philadelphia holds the second National League wild-card spot, sitting a half-game behind the Chicago Cubs and one game ahead of the San Diego Padres. The club opened a two-game series against the Washington Nationals on Tuesday holding a 3½-game lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks for the final playoff position.
