Pochettino: No Punishment Can Repair Damage from Manchester City Financial Breaches

United States manager Mauricio Pochettino stated on Monday that no punishment can repair the damage done to the Premier League after Manchester City was found guilty of 114 out of 115 financial regulation charges. The breaches occurred between 2009 and 2018, a period in which the club secured three Premier League titles, one FA Cup, and three League Cups. Pochettino, who managed Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, and Chelsea for eight seasons, claimed the competition lived through a period where "sporting justice did not exist."

Pochettino highlighted the disparity in financial controls, noting that during his tenure at Tottenham, the club went 18 months without a signing while building a new stadium. During the 2017-18 season, Spurs finished third behind Manchester City, and in the prior season, they finished second to a Chelsea side also found to have breached financial rules. The U.S. coach questioned why regulations were strictly enforced on certain clubs while others, including Everton and Nottingham Forest, received varied sanctions such as fines or point deductions.

The verdict casts doubt on iconic moments like Sergio Aguero’s 2011-12 stoppage-time goal against Queens Park Rangers, which secured City's first top-flight title since 1968. Pochettino described the situation as a "period of deceit" that clouded the legitimacy of past celebrations. The USMNT manager spoke ahead of a Tuesday friendly against Chile, which precedes upcoming matches against Mexico and Canada in the current international window.
