OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The Baltimore Ravens signed kicker Jake Moody to the practice squad on Monday, three days after Tyler Loop missed two field goal attempts in the preseason finale at M&T Bank Stadium. Loop finished the preseason converting 5-of-8 field goals, a 62.5% success rate, including misses from 49, 51, and 58 yards. Despite the addition of competition, head coach Jesse Minter confirmed Loop remains the expected starter for the September 13 season opener in Indianapolis. The 26-year-old Moody arrives in Baltimore two weeks after his release from the Washington Commanders, where he lost a roster battle to undrafted rookie Drew Stevens.

Moody, a 2023 third-round pick by the San Francisco 49ers, represents the highest-drafted kicker of the last decade. Over his professional career with the 49ers, Chicago Bears, and Commanders, he has converted 64 of 82 field goal attempts. His career success rate of 78% ranks 31st among NFL kickers with at least 50 attempts since 2023. Last season, after being cut by San Francisco following two misses in the season opener, Moody rebounded to make 18 of 20 attempts (90%) during his time with Chicago and Washington.

Minter Backs Loop for Season Opener

Coach Jesse Minter maintained his public support for Loop during Monday's practice, citing a strong training camp where the kicker missed only a handful of attempts across 20 sessions. The Ravens previously showed total confidence in Loop by not rosterng any other kickers during spring workouts or the summer schedule. Loop is currently working to overcome the memory of a 44-yard, last-second miss that ended Baltimore's previous season eight months ago. Minter noted that the team is attempting to cover every scenario by adding a veteran like Moody to the practice squad.

There is a pre-existing connection between the new acquisition and the coaching staff. Moody played his final collegiate season at the University of Michigan in 2022, a year when Minter served as the Wolverines' defensive coordinator. During his recent stint in Washington, Moody struggled in training camp, notably missing four out of six kicks during a single practice session. Minter described the move as an opportunity to see how the competition shakes out while adding a player who has already found success in the league.

Defensive Roster Updates and Injury Status

In addition to the special teams moves, Minter provided an update on Pro Bowl defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike. The defender missed the final 15 weeks of the previous season due to a neck injury that required surgical intervention in April. Baltimore opted not to place Madubuike on injured reserve this Saturday, a decision that prevents him from being forced to sit out the first four games of the regular season. Minter stated he expects Madubuike to play early this year and does not anticipate him missing a significant number of games.

Loop enters the regular season looking to stabilize his performance after hearing boos from the home crowd during his recent preseason struggles. The Ravens' decision to add Moody marks the first time this year that Loop has faced direct competition on the roster. The team will continue to evaluate both players at the practice facility in Owings Mills as they prepare for the trip to Indianapolis to start the 2026 campaign.
