Junior Caminero hit a two-run walk-off home run to give the Tampa Bay Rays a 3-1 victory over the Houston Astros and a postseason berth.

Junior Caminero hit a game-ending, two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Tampa Bay Rays to a 3-1 victory over the Houston Astros on Friday night. The blast marked Caminero’s 40th home run of the season and officially secured a postseason spot for Tampa Bay (88-59). According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Rays are the first major league team to clinch a playoff berth this year and the earliest to do so since the Atlanta Braves on Sept. 10, 2023.

The victory maintains Tampa Bay’s three-game lead over the New York Yankees in the American League East. The Rays have now held the best record in the American League for 115 days this season. This clinch marks the franchise's first return to the playoffs in three years, following a 2023 wild-card series loss where they dropped two consecutive games to the Texas Rangers.

Manager Kevin Cash told reporters via MLB.com that he was impressed with the consistency of the group throughout the season. Designated hitter Yandy Diaz noted that the team’s next objective is securing the division title. Beyond the AL East crown, the Rays are aiming to lock up the best record in the American League to earn a first-round playoff bye. ESPN News Services reported that of the teams to clinch the first postseason berths over the last decade, only four—the 2016 Cubs, 2018 Red Sox, 2020 Dodgers, and 2024 Yankees—reached the World Series.
