Major League Baseball has relocated the regular-season finale between the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs to Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. According to ESPN, Game 162 will take place Sunday afternoon after a nor'easter forecast, involving rain throughout Saturday and Sunday, forced the series out of Boston. The teams played a doubleheader on Friday to avoid the storm, with the Red Sox sweeping both games.

Following the Friday sweep, Boston is locked into the American League's No. 3 seed. The losses left the Cubs two games behind San Diego for the top National League wild-card spot. Both clubs are scheduled to begin wild-card playoff rounds on Tuesday, making a Monday makeup date in Boston undesirable for both organizations.

The league originally considered moving the third game to Saturday in Boston, but Cubs manager Craig Counsell noted that such a change would have disrupted the five-day starting rotation window. Instead, both teams will fly to Florida late Friday and have Saturday off before the Sunday conclusion. This relocation ensures the regular season ends on schedule before postseason play begins.
