Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and manager Chad Tracy denied that front-office data dictated the early removal of starting pitchers during the AL Wild Card Series.

Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and manager Chad Tracy denied the existence of franchise-wide directives regarding in-game analytics following a two-game sweep by the New York Yankees in the AL Wild Card Series. The Red Sox were outscored 18-2 in the series, including a 9-0 loss in Game 1 and a 9-2 defeat in Game 2. The losses followed a regular season where Boston went on a 32-5 summer run under Tracy.

Controversy centered on the removal of starting pitchers before the fifth inning in both contests. In the opener, rookie Payton Tolle was pulled after 4 2/3 innings and 83 pitches while trailing 1-0. During Game 2, Sonny Gray—who led the American League in winning percentage with an 18-5 record and 2.72 ERA—was removed after 4 2/3 innings and 70 pitches with Boston down 1-0. Following Gray's exit, the Yankees scored eight additional runs against the Boston bullpen.

First baseman Willson Contreras publicly questioned the reliance on data over talent following the elimination. Tracy confirmed he met with Contreras for multiple hours to discuss these concerns but maintained that all pitching changes were his own decisions rather than front-office scripts. Breslow further stated that the role of scouts has not been diminished within the organization's decision-making process.

Regarding roster health, Breslow indicated that outfielder Roman Anthony is unlikely to undergo surgery for a right hand injury sustained in Game 1. Anthony, who previously missed time from May to August with an injury to the same hand, is expected to follow a recovery path of rest. The team also dealt with the absence of Garrett Crochet, who missed the final five months of the season due to left shoulder inflammation.
