Red Sox to Activate Adley Rutschman Tuesday Following Left Wrist Inflammation

Adley Rutschman is expected to return to the Red Sox lineup on Tuesday after recovering from left wrist inflammation.

Adley Rutschman is scheduled to be activated from the injured list on Tuesday, August 11, ahead of the Boston Red Sox game against the Toronto Blue Jays. The three-time All-Star catcher has been sidelined since July 18 due to left wrist inflammation. Interim manager Chad Tracy confirmed the timeline on Monday at Rogers Centre, noting that Rutschman was slated for a pregame workout to finalize his return to the active roster.

During a two-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester over the weekend, Rutschman logged five at-bats and recorded one hit, which was a double. He finished the stint with two runs scored and two RBIs while splitting time between the catcher position and designated hitter. Following those appearances, he traveled to Toronto to join the Red Sox as they began a three-game series against their American League East rivals.

Trade Details and Roster Impact

Boston acquired Rutschman from the Baltimore Orioles last Monday just before the MLB trade deadline. To secure the catcher, the Red Sox sent a package of five players to Baltimore, including prospects Anthony Eyanson, Kyson Witherspoon, and Enddy Azocar. The deal also featured catcher Carlos Narvaez and a player to be named later. Jake Rogers, who currently occupies a spot on the Boston big league roster, was also part of the return from Baltimore in the transaction.

The Red Sox currently carry two catchers, Connor Wong and Jake Rogers, but a roster move is imminent. Tracy stated that the club is unlikely to maintain three catchers on the active roster once Rutschman is officially reinstated. The interim manager described the potential of carrying three players at the position as a challenge for this stage of the season.

Rehabilitation and Recovery Timeline

Rutschman’s absence reached nearly three weeks before his weekend stint in Worcester. His 1-for-5 performance in Triple-A served as the final hurdle before he flew to meet the major league club in Canada. The Monday pregame session at Rogers Centre was designed to ensure the wrist remained stable after the weekend's game action.

If the activation proceeds as expected on Tuesday night, it will mark Rutschman's debut for the Red Sox since the high-profile trade. The move comes as Boston navigates the opening of their three-game set in Toronto, which commenced Monday evening. The team will need to designate a roster spot for the incoming All-Star before the first pitch of Tuesday's contest.

Managing the Catching Rotation

With Rutschman joining Wong and Rogers, the Red Sox coaching staff faces a decision on how to trim the roster. The acquisition of Rogers in the same Baltimore deal created a temporary surplus at the position. Tracy’s comments on Monday afternoon indicated that the current three-man catching group is a short-term situation that will be resolved by the time the Tuesday night game begins against the Blue Jays.
