The Los Angeles Dodgers dropped three of four games in the Dodgers Brewers series, falling 6-2 on Sunday while surrendering a crucial postseason tiebreaker.
Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts publicly criticized his roster following a 6-2 defeat against the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday. The loss resulted in Milwaukee securing the head-to-head tiebreaker for postseason seeding and moving three games ahead of Los Angeles for the National League’s top record. During the final two matchups of the series, the Dodgers offense managed only three runs on 11 hits and three walks. The club has now lost 11 of its last 16 games, a stretch that includes being swept by the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs, alongside series losses to the Arizona Diamondbacks and Milwaukee.
Since July 1, the defending back-to-back World Series champions have posted an 18-21 record. Roberts noted that the lineup has struggled with below-average production for approximately four to six weeks. Specific offensive failures highlighted by the manager included a lack of discipline on 2-1 and 3-2 counts, as well as chasing first pitches to fall behind 0-1. Shohei Ohtani contributed to the struggles in the series finale, grounding into an inning-ending double play during the seventh inning with runners occupying first and third base.
Defensive Breakdowns Cost Los Angeles
Defensive errors proved costly in the Sunday finale, particularly from second baseman Tommy Edman. Edman committed two errors that directly led to three Milwaukee runs. The first occurred in the second inning with the bases loaded; Edman failed to cleanly handle a throw from Mookie Betts for what would have been an inning-ending force out. This mistake allowed the Brewers to record their first run of the game. Later, in the ninth inning, Edman was unable to field a ground ball for a potential double play, an error that extended the deficit to 6-1.
Roberts characterized the team's play as lacking "clean baseball" for a significant period. He emphasized that the lack of urgency on every pitch has become a recurring issue, noting that some players are scuffling with their swings while others are failing to value individual pitches. The manager stated that simply expecting to emerge from the slump is insufficient, suggesting that the team must change its approach to rectify its current form.
Postseason Seeding Implications
Despite the recent slide, Los Angeles maintains a seven-game lead over the San Diego Padres in the NL West standings. The club remains in a three-way battle with the Brewers and Atlanta Braves for the two top seeds that grant a bye past the wild-card rounds. However, the loss in the Dodgers Brewers series means Milwaukee now holds the advantage if the two teams finish the regular season with identical records.
Roberts expressed concern regarding the long-term impact of the Sunday result, stating he specifically wanted the win because of its potential postseason implications. While he maintains trust in the collective ability of the group, he described the current stretch as an extended funk that requires hard work to overcome. The Dodgers have now failed to maintain a consistent plan of attack from the first through the ninth spot in the batting order, leading to the current 5-11 skid over the last 16 contests.
